Formed in the early sixties in Weymouth, England, The Crescendoes toured extensively in the UK, often working as support band for groups such as The Searchers and The Swinging Blues Jeans, prior to leaving England for a ‘short’ tour of Europe. In Germany they were an immediate success, the ‘short’ tour was extended, and for the following years, throughout the mid-sixties, the band was based in Frankfurt. From there they toured widely, not only throughout Germany, but also in Scandinavia, France, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland. Rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the leading ‘Show Bands’, they were soon offered a recording contract with Metronome Records, and the release of their first single, Heidi Heidi Ho, became a surprise success. This was quickly followed by another record publication Little Egypt, and their first album was released in the mid-sixties to coincide with a television appearance on Music from Studio B with Chris Howland. More television shows followed with appearances on the legendary Beat Club and Drehschiebe, and at the height of their popularity they were regular guests on Beat-Club, a weekly radio show broadcast from Frankfurt, with Heinz Lukasz. The subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, The Crescendoes appeared at all the major venues in Germany, including special guest appearances at the legendary Star Club and Top Ten Club in Hamburg. They worked alongside many of the most popular recording stars of the swinging sixties, including Gilbert Becaud, Chris Andrews, Vivi Bach, Heidi Bruhl, and after an appearance with Tony Sheriden, when they backed him in cabaret, he asked if they would like to tour Germany with him as his backing group. However, their own busy schedule made this impossible as they were also in demand back home in England, where they regularly returned for tours of the major venues throughout England, Wales and Scotland.
