( April 10, 2008)

THE PENTHOUSE 5 - The WorlD Is LoVe! (From Dallas, Texas, they formed in the wake of the British Invasion in 1965 and started out as a Merseybeat sounding garage band. In 1966 and early 1967 they changed to a melodic folk rock and psychedelic outfit)
********************************
This superb 20-song collection includes not only the best released and unreleased sides by the Penthouse 5, but also sides (often other, earlier versions of songs cut by the Penthouse by the related groups the By Fives and the WordD, as well as Ron Price's original, Dylan-like demo of the original Penthouse 5's first single, "Don't Mess Around with My Dreams." Although the Penthouse 5 is the best of them, each of the bands was amazingly accomplished in both singing and playing Beatlesque songs with an edge (think of the Monkees as a real garage band), and their songwriting, mostly the responsibility of Keathley and Graham, was formidable when it wasn't too pretentious. The sound throughout is also excellent, and the only wasted space here are the rehearsals and backing tracks to one pair of songs, which take lots of time but don't reveal a lot about their way of working.
