1997 - Love, Peace & Poetry: American Psychedelic Music

A couple of things differentiate this 18-song compilation from the usual obscure psychedelia reissue. The cuts date from a slightly later vintage than the usual compilation of this sort (1968-1971, except for a track each from 1973 and 1977), which gives it much less of a garage, and somewhat more of a "progressive," feel than much of its competition. Also, the track selection is focused on "private-press" LPs that were issued in minute quantities, often primarily for friends and locals. Lazy Smoke, Hunger, the Music Emporium, and if you push it, Darius and the New Tweedy Brothers, might be familiar to some specialist collectors, but otherwise you'd have a hard time getting a roomful of folks together who've heard of all these groups. All that said, the music, while reflecting the diversity of sounds released on obscure U.S. psychedelic recordings, is largely untouched by genius. It's more like a folkloric time capsule illustrating how far the influence of acid rock extended, down to untold numbers of bands playing original if usually derivative material on LPs that had no chance of finding a wide audience. It's certainly listenable, with the female vocals by Victoria and Music Emporium adding some texture not usually found on such anthologies. Hunger's "Colors" stands out from the pack with its bolero rhythms, creepy organ, liquid distorted guitar, and hardened vocal. Better yet is Darius' "Shades of Blue," which sounds like a crazed, downbeat Lee Michaels, ending with an astonishing pained scream; his self-titled 1968 album (from which this was taken) is well worth finding.

1999 - Love, Peace & Poetry: Asian Psychedelic Music

There are innumerable compilations of obscure 1960s psychedelic and garage music from the U.S., U.K., and the European continent. But the field of Asian '60s psych has, for the most part, remained relatively untapped, at least as far as reissues for Western consumption. In part that's because there wasn't nearly as much Asian psychedelia as there was Western psychedelia; rock music and psychedelic rock originated in North America and Europe, after all. And, in part, it's because Asian psych is hard to find and collect, that field just beginning to develop among record collectors more than 30 years later. However, there was some Asian psych, and some of what has been found comprises this 14-song compilation. Actually, only four of the tracks are from the 1960s; about half is from the early 1970s, and there's even a Korean ringer from 1977. Don't necessarily be put off by the relatively late vintage, though; it's the consequence of trends taking longer to reach the far corners of the globe, and most of the cuts are plugged into a firmly late-'60s vibe. What might surprise you, though, is how much the songs sound like second-division North American and European bands, not just Asian ones combining indigenous influences with Western rock music. Yes, there is some Asian and Middle Eastern color to the melodies and arrangements, sometimes prominently so, as in the modish rave-up by Erkin Koray (from Turkey) and certainly in Cambodian Rocks' "A2," a missing link between psych and the B-52's with its stiff rhythms and female banshee vocals. At least as often, though, it's rather standard fuzzy, drone psych-garage that could have almost been done by local bands from English-speaking nations, or from Holland for that matter. It just sounds more novel to English-readers because of the unfamiliar languages (and accents, when they do sing in English) from Japan, Turkey, India, Singapore, and Korea. All this is to say that it's not quite as exotic as you might hope (or fear), and that while it's enjoyable (usually in a moody sort of way), it's short on really outstanding songs. There's some rather cool stuff here, though, like the Fentones' raunch'n'raga instrumental "Simla Beat Theme" (from India); Mogollar's "Katip Arzvhalim Yaz Yare Boyle" (from Turkey), whose fusion of full electric band and indigenous melodies sounds rather close to what is now commonly known as "world music"; the Confusions' "Voice from the Inner Soul" (from India), which sounds very much like a savage Rolling Stones-type garage rocker that an American 1965 band would have done, although it was cut in 1970; and (from Singapore) the Quest's unlikely psychedelic version of the Four Preps' hit "26 Miles" with humming distorted guitar and atmospheric foghorn blasts. Best of all is the ten-minute closer, "Korean Titel A2" (from Korea, of course) by Jung Hyun and the Men, which has a beguiling minor-key melody and snake-charming interplay between a reed instrument, woozy organ, and backup vocal harmonies.

2001 - Love, Peace & Poetry: Japanese Psychedelic Music

The Love, Peace & Poetry series takes its international psych tour to the Far East for some of Japan's vintage garage freakouts. The time period stretches from 1968-1972, and the music features some of the hardest psych jams to be heard. Seemingly inspired more by Hendrix and the San Francisco scene's pure instrumental explorations than the more tuneful terrain essayed on the England and America LPP editions, many combos featured here expose the roots of current-day Japanese tripsters Acid Mothers Temple with a blizzard of effects-riddled guitars, some raw-toned space organ, and a panoply of cryptic vocals. In a word: The aim is more to jam down the interstellar road than to always deliver cohesive nuggets of psych pop. And while Apryl Fool and Speed, Glue & Shinki bring the heavy instrumental sound, Foodbrain, the Mops, and the Happenings Four do expand things nicely with some surf and jangly pop touches. A standout from an essential rare-groove psych series.

2001 - Love, Peace & Poetry: British Psychedelic Music

After touching down on the psychedelic ground of America, Asia, Latin America, and Japan, the folks at QDK have headed to Ole' Blighty for some late-'60s and early-'70s blotter fun. Alluding to the day's musical giants, the mix conjures up the goth organ ambience of Procol Harum (Bodkin's "Three Days After Death, Pt. 1"), the Small Faces' mod experimentation (Andwella's Dream's "Felix"), Hendrix's blues balladry (Candida Pax's "Reach Out"), and, of course, the Beatles' paisley pop (Gary Walker & the Rain's "Magazine Woman"). Through the mesmerizing and lo-fi mix of fuzz guitar, wobbly vocals, organ trippiness, and all-around garage raving, most tracks here transcend their obvious influences to become something fairly original. More far out than Syd Barrett at times and even catchier than an Association hit, this edition of the Love, Peace & Poetry series will provide crate-digging psych fans a host of musical pleasures.

2002 - Love, Peace & Poetry: Brazilian Psychedelic Music

The sixth volume in QDK Media's series of psychedelic rock compilation CDs points the spotlight on the rich -- although very underground -- Brazilian music scene. As Stan Denski explains in the liner notes, the mid- to late '60s were the days of General Humberto Castelo's dictatorship, which made any musical activity a political act. Those were also the days of the Tropicalia movement, and if the artists on this collection never had the exposure or appeal of people like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, they don't escape their influence. Then again, "psychedelic" means a lot of British and American pop entered the ears of these young Brazilian musicians. The results range from entertaining exotic clones of the Jefferson Airplane (O Têrço's "I Need You") and the Rolling Stones (Paulo Bagunça's "Mensageiro") to genuinely original forms of rock music. Imagine Tropicalia percussion, flute, and Portuguese lyrics backed by loud fuzz guitars and hard-rocking rhythm sections. Highlights include O Bando's opening "É Assim Falava Mefistófeles," Liverpool's "Voando," Spectrum's "Trilha Antiga" (from the album Geraçao Bendita), Os Lobos' dreamy "Miragem" (strong Byrds influence here), and the stunning, irrevocably stoned, and exploratory "Marácas de Fogo" by Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho. The sound quality on some tracks, especially those coming from albums not yet reissued on CD, leaves a lot to the imagination, but that's the kind of thing you expect from a specialist's collection of obscure releases. Nevertheless, with its 19 cuts from as many artists, this collection delivers more than a mouthful.
