This double-CD anthology, Mersey Beat: The Story of the 60s is a very serious expansion upon the earlier Liverpool rock anthologies from Sequel and other imprints associated with the Castle and Sanctuary labels. Where most of the earlier releases in this vein from Castle were limited to the contents of the Pye Records library, this time they've reached out to include tracks from groups on EMI, Polygram, and others, and come up with a rather more comprehensive anthology. They've also distilled down a lot of the best music from those earlier compilations, going back to the late '80s, so that alongside various international stars (Gerry & the Pacemakers, the Swinging Blue Jeans) and super- and mega-star acts (the Beatles, represented by "Ain't She Sweet" from their Hamburg period), you get people like Johnny Sandon (with the Remo Four), the Trends, the Chants, and the Undertakers. Castle has also expanded its scope to embrace oddities such as one demo by Billy Fury -- Liverpool's first homegrown rock star -- and girl group outfits such as the Three Bells, who never quite made it but were an integral part of the city's musical landscape. Between the selection and the overall sound quality (which is excellent or better except on the Fury demo which, in a move of supreme bravery, opens the collection), this is arguably as good an anthology of the sound spawned by the city as any ever released, and may open a few people's ears to some of the deserving acts from off the top tier who should be better known; that's especially true of the Undertakers (also referred to as the 'Takers and represented here in both guises) and Jeannie & the Big Guys; you also get the supreme moments of glory for such Brian Epstein-managed indulgences as Tommy Quickly (also backed by the Remo Four) (whose "Kiss Me Now" should have been a contender for at least the U.K. Top 20).What makes this collection even better is that, just as ordinary listening, it's one of the most thoroughly rewarding assemblies of dance music from the period that one is likely to find -- even the ballads have a beat, and all of it is catchy, even the relatively obscure stuff such as "Here She Comes" by the Three Bells. And the collection also embraces the mid-'60s second-generation sounds spawned in the city, by such acts as the Merseys (offshoots of the Merseybeats), Paddy, Klaus & Gibson, Chris Curtis (post-Searchers), making it one of the most comprehensive anthologies of its type on just two CDs. All of that said, there are a few holes -- along with the Big Three, whose "Some Other Guy" is here, one wishes that there'd been room made for at least one song by Tony Sheridan, who loomed large in the Liverpool pecking order at the start of the '60s, and perhaps something by Rory Storm & the Hurricanes as well, as a group that was distinctly more popular than the Beatles at the start of the decade represented. Still, as far as it goes, this is virtually a self-contained crash course in the pop music history of Merseybeat and British rock & roll from 1961 through 1966, and a lot of fun, and it also comes with some nicely thorough annotation to back up the music. It's a great place to start discovering the music, and also not a bad acquisition for those already well familiar with the music in question.



Pete Best - Back to the Beat


Pete's second incarnation of the Pete Best Band for the 1990s, and it's not much of an improvement. Pete went back to Liverpool, again, to record a concert, this time at a replica of the original Cavern, where he once played with another band called the Beatles. Once again, this CD is filled with poorly recorded, second-rate cover versions of rock & roll standards. Worth noting, however, is that Pete actually covers several songs the Beatles themselves had covered, and his band performs their versions of two Lennon/McCartney songs, "Love Me Do" and "I Saw Her Standing There." Once again, one gets the sensation of hearing a bar band covering Beatle songs while patrons drink and occasionally clap. 

As with his other CD, it is difficult to judge Best's playing, as he is joined on drums by his brother, Roeg Best, for undiscernible reasons. If it was Pete's intention to show the music world that he is a talented musician, rather than an interesting footnote, he does not succeed with this release. Instead, the listener cannot help but feel pity for the guy. Once again, Beatle completists only; all others should avoid.













The Outlaws - Ku-Pow !


The Outlaws' story begins in London in 1960, with Billy Grey and the Stormers. The group's line-up comprised Billy Grey (vocals), Billy Kuy (lead guitar), Reg Hawkins (rhythm guitar), Chas Hodges (bass) and Bobby Graham (drums). The group played the usual round of youth clubs, dance halls and holiday camps. In the autumn of 1960 Billy Grey left the group to get married. The remaining four members auditioned for Joe Meek, who was searching for a backing group for his new discovery Mike Berry. Meek was so delighted with the group's performance that they became his in house session band, backing not only Mike Berry, but all manner of Meek proteges : John Leyton, Heinz, Glenda Collins, Freddie Starr and numerous others. Meek re-named the band The Outlaws to tie in with a Wild West image that he was keen to bestow upon them.

Their first single, "Swingin' Low", a rocked-up rendition of the traditional "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", was released in March 1961, on HMV POP 844. I clearly remember first hearing the record on Radio Luxembourg on a Monday evening. Generally I'm more into sax / piano instrumentals, but this fresh guitar sound made quite an impression on me. With a peak position of # 46 on the UK charts, this was an encouraging start. The next single, "Ambush", was overdubbed with sound effects (gunshots, horses whinnying), and did only slightly better at # 43. Nobody could guess then that it would be the Outlaws' last chart entry. "Ambush" and its flip, "Indian Brave" also appeared on the Outlaws' first and only LP, "Dream of the West", (late 1961), which qualifies as an early concept album. Meek wrote all twelve tracks (under his songwriting pseudonym, Robert Duke), as well as writing the sleeve notes. It seems that the Outlaws received no money or royalties for the project, being paid mainly with fish and chips suppers! The next single had "Valley of the Sioux" on the A-side, but it was the other side, "Crazy Drums" (a sort of Sandy Nelson meets Mickey Baker) that showed Joe Meek at his most innovative. Such was his technical wizardry with the basic track that the group members hardly recognized their original contributions.

Kuy was replaced by Roger Mingay, Hawkins by Ken Lundgren and Graham by Don Groom. This line-up plays on their fourth (and best, IMHO) single, "Ku-Pow!"/"Last Stage West", released in February 1962. "Ku-Pow!" was clearly inspired by Duane Eddy's "Shazam!", but for me this does not detract from its greatness. After this, "Sioux Serenade"/"Fort Knox" was a slight disappointment, melodic though both sides were. With its overdubbed strings and pizzicatos, it could have been a John Barry record. However, all this changed with the arrival of Ritchie Blackmore (lead guitar) and Mick Underwood (drums) in October 1962, both from Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages. This line-up lasted until April 1964 and recorded the last four 45s by the Outlaws, among which a few vocal numbers : "That Set the Wild West Free", and their final single, "Keep-a Knockin'"/"Shake With Me", featuring proto-heavy metal guitar work by Ritchie Blackmore, unheard of in 1964. In the summer of 1963, The Outlaws had the privilege of backing two giants of rock 'n' roll, Gene Vincent and Jerry Lee Lewis. Vincent was so impressed that he hired them to back him again in September of the same year. The group also made one film appearance, in the above-average jukebox drama "Live It Up" (1963).

After the departure of Blackmore in April 1964, the group struggled on until mid-1965, before disbanding. The time for instrumental groups of that type (apart from the ever-popular Shadows) had clearly passed, two years into the Merseybeat boom.

Burt BLANCA

Burt Blanca was born on August 6, 1944 in the northern suburbs from Brussels.  Guitarist of considered studios, Burt Blanca is the pioneer of the rock'n'roll in Belgium.  He is the interpreter of many hit tunes such as:  Touche pas a mon rock'n'roll, Ma Guitare bleue, Le Train ne passe plus par la, Voila le temps des vacances, Dansons, Limbobossa, Rock'n'Roll is good for the soul, Le Locomotion, Hey Baby, Twist twist senora or ClapClap Sound.  First price of Academy, author, type-setter and musical arranger, he will become singer by largest of the chances!  A life in rock'n'roll at the age of the 5 years, Norbert is caught and attracted by the music.  Thus it begins with the accordion.  Very gifted pupil, Norbert quickly climbs the various levels of the musical courses which it attends and gains several prices. 
 
At the 7 years age it is with the clarinet that Norbert begins. 
 
At the 14 years age, he discovers the guitar and the rock' roll.  "Managed" by his brother, Norbert became Burt BLANCA and takes down in 1959 a contract with the Belgian firm "Hebra records” a Flemish version of the success of Neil Sedaka "OH CAROL" and "I LOVE YOU SO", one of its compositions.  In Parallel, he went to the academy of Brussels with the clarinet.  After the recording of one 45 record for the French label "Festival", Burt signs in 1961 a contract with the French firm "Pathe- Marconi", under the management of Jean Paul GUITER, also artistic director of "LES CHATS SAUVAGES", with which he will collaborate until 1964. 
With the 16 years age he attends all the Belgian studios of recording, with the guitar, to accompany:  ADAMO, FREDERIC FRANCOIS, ROBERT COGOI, ANDRE BRASSEUR, CLAUDE BARZOTTI, PLASTIC BERTRAND, WILL TURA, JOHAN VERMINNEN..... and also some French artists, not of least:  CHARLES AZNAVOUR, JULIETTE GRECO, GILBERT BECAUD, CARAVELLI, LA COMPAGNIE CREOLE.... 
 
In the years 1960, he is devoted like one of the "sizes" of the rock'n'roll in Europe.  Burt will play an uninterrupted series of concerts in various prestigious rooms (le Golf Drouot, Palais des sports in Paris, in Olympia in Paris, etc.)  and will officiate with the same poster as a number of artists of international fame (THE ANIMALS, THE KINKS, GENE VINCENT, inter alia). 
 
In 1964, he makes two rounds with Gene VINCENT.  The same year he is programmed in Olympia in Paris. 
 
In 1968, Burt BLANCA makes a hit with "R.N.ROLL IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL" with the brother of an American producer Albert VAN HOOGTEN, who makes pass Burt for an American under the pseudonym of Winky HAWKS.
  
Always in 68, Burt meets in MONTBELLIARD, Vince TAYLOR, who is then "with the trough of vagueness".  Vince finds himself without musicians and after his show, Burt proposes to him to accompany it with his musicians.
 
In the years 1970, Burt will specialize in the albums of rock' roll covers under his name.  This return to the rock'n'roll of the Fifties will do of Burt BLANCA one of accustomed first parts of famous rockers such as:  JERRY LEE LEWIS, CHUCK BERRY, GARY GLITTER.
 
In 1974, Burt makes the first part of Bill HALEY in ANCIENNE BELGIQUE of Brussels.  Burt ensured, several times, the first part of JohnnyHALLIDAY.
 
In 1976, following an estrangement with his brother, Burt is found without anything.  That curbs temporarily its career.  At the same time, Burt goes up on stage of Forest National.  He is found to make dance parties, in competition with Liane FOLY, GOLD, Jean Jacques GOLDMAN, VOULZY, SOUCHON.  At the beginning of the Eighties, Burt collaborates with the producer Lou DEPRIJCK.  He plays and composes for PLASTIC BERTRAND.  During this Burt composes the hit : “THEY’LL NEVER KILL R.N.Roll” at HEBRA RECORDS. 
 
In 1983, he creates Belgian group THE KLAXONS and composes, in collaboration with his friends Jean-Marie TROISFONTAINE and RogerVERBESTEL, the piece "Clap, Clap Sound".  The title becomes number 1 of the sales.  25 weeks number 1, in South Africa in front of QUEEN, MICHAEL JACKSON AND LIONEL RICHIE. "CLAP, CLAP SOUND" is many times disc of gold, platinum and today disc of diamond.  It should be noted that the piece will be taken again the same year in a version sung by GRAND JOJO under the title SERGENT FLAGADA.  Despite everything the encountered problems, Burt comes out regularly of the 33 and 45 records. His first CD is born also at HEBRA RECORDS and very quickly become missing "25 YEARS AGO AND NOW".  Then it is the title "UN TRAIN CE SOIR", which makes the turn of the world.
 
In the eighties, missing on T.V. and radio’s, most of his fans think that he stopped playin’music but continue to buy the CD’s. After a few years, Burt BLANCA makes in 1998 the albums "IL FAUT LE VIVRE" and its English copy "HERE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW" (Hebra Records) to which take part Ricky NORTON as author, Alain DARMOR English joint author, and Burt the composer.  These albums came out in 2003, at the same time as CD "CLASSICAL ROMANCE".  At the beginning of the years 2000, he becomes musical arranger for Reader' S Digest. 
 
In November 2003, Burt BLANCA is the head of the show in  the THEATRE DE LA LOUVIERE in Belgium.
 
At the end of January 2004, he is a part of the recording of a television series "FAMILIE", this episode was diffused at the beginning of December 2004 on chain VTM in Belgium.  In June 2004, he found his notoriety back, and is again on stage of OLYMPIA in PARIS.  In October, Burt celebrates its 45 years of career in ANCIENNE BELGIQUE in Brussels.  July 2, 2005, "at the Community from Wallonia in Brussels, Burt BLANCA is decorated OFFICER ABOUT the CROWN (Equivalent with the French legion of honor) by the minister with the Belgian Culture," Mrs. Fadila LAANAN ".
 
Burt BLANCA accompanied with their musicians the American artists such as:  Wanda JACKSON, Linda GAIL LEWIS....
 
In June 2006 double CD is born:  "MON AVENTURE" and "SUCCES D’HIER ET DE DEMAIN".  In 2007, Burt comes out a DVD, heading "the OTHER KING OF  ROCK'N'ROLL!!!  ", taking the integrality of a concert collected on July 1, 2006 on stage of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux.  Produced by association "Burt BLANCA", this DVD is composed of 33 titles.  Parallel to its solo career, Burt never gave up his activities of musician of studio.  Thus, one can find him with the guitar, the pedal-steel, the banjo or the accordion on recordings of other artists.

The Challengers - Surfbeat (1963)


One of the most popular of the early Southern Californian surf bands, the Challengers were formed by drummer Richard Delvy after he left the Bel-Airs, who had recorded one of the very first surf singles, "Mr. Moto." Their debut LP, Surfbeat (early 1963), was one of the very first all-instrumental surf albums and sold 200,000 copies, an astronomical number for a regional act. Recording several albums over the next couple of years, most of their repertoire consisted of covers of popular rock and surf tunes; undeniably exciting at the time, their lack of originality can make their work generic to wade through. The moody "K-39," also available on surf compilations, is their most famous cut.


Released in January, 1963, Surfbeat was one of the very first surf music albums to hit the stores. The album is almost a history of surf music itself, or at least its roots, with excellent takes of rock & roll staples like "Red River Rock," "Ramrod," "Movin' & Groovin," and "Torquay" aboard. With a nod to Dick Dale and the Beach Boys, the group also covered "Surfin' Safari," "Miserlou," "Let's Go Trippin'," and "Surf Beat." This is not only a historically important album, but one that really rocks as well.

Maryla Rodowicz - Sing-Sing (1976) Poland


Her career began in 1967, after winning first prize at "Festiwal Piosenki i Piosenkarzy Studenckich" (The Student Songs and Singers' Festival) in Kraków. Two years later she recorded her first well-known song, "Mówiły mu" ("The girls told him", English version known as "Love Doesn't Grow On Trees"), and in 1970 - her first longplay. In 1973, she gained popularity with the song "Małgośka" with lyrics by Agnieszka Osiecka. A year later, during the World Cup Opening Ceremony in Munich, she performed a song "Futbol" ("Football").
The singer's body of work comprises over 600 recorded songs, with over 20 Polish albums as well as albums in English, Czech, German and Russian. Apart from "Małgośka", the artist's most famous songs are "Niech żyje bal" ("Long live the ball"), "To już było" ("Done that"), "Wielka Woda ("Great water"), "Rozmowa przez ocean" ("Talk over the ocean"), "Bossanova do poduszki" ("Bedside bossanova"), "Łatwopalni" ("Inflammables") and her latest album's hits such as "Wszyscy chcą kochać" ("Everybody wants to love") and "Będzie co ma być" ("What is to be, will be"). In 2005 she recorded an album "Kochać" ("To love") with lyrics by Katarzyna Nosowska. On the occasion of World Cup 2006, she recorded a song "Za Janasa" ("For Janas") with Nosowska's lyrics.
Rodowicz has performed in concert worldwide: in Europe, America, Australia, and Asia. She has won awards for her singing. She has also participated in various festivals including outside the borders of Poland, for example in Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, and Tulsa, as well as in Poland including Festiwal Piosenki i Piosenkarzy Studenckich (The Student Songs and Singers' Festival) in Kraków and at Krajowy Festiwal Piosenki Polskiej (The National Polish Song Festival) in Opole.
Rodowicz is also an actress who has performed in several movies and in musical entertainment. She regularly performs in a Polsat TV channel series Rodzina zastępcza (Foster Family).
In 1992 she released her autobiography under the title of Niech żyje bal.

Zespół powstał w Poznaniu w 1981 roku, założony przez Piotra Rybickiego (perkusja), Marka Skarżyńskiego (gitara, śpiew) i Jarosława Panka (gitara basowa, śpiew), początkowo jako zespół szkolny przy technikum mechanicznym. Wkrótce do zespołu dołączyli Michał Gielniak (gitara, śpiew) oraz Edward Szmigiel (gitara basowa, śpiew). Od samego początku działalności grupa występowała w formie typowego rockandrollowego kwartetu (gitara prowadząca, gitara rytmiczna, gitara basowa, perkusja) wykonując utwory The Beatles i covery będące wypadkową zainteresowań członków zespołu. Z czasem w repertuarze zespołu pojawiły się polskie przeboje z lat 60. głównie z repertuaru Czerwonych Gitar, a także utwory anglosaskie wykonywane niegdyś przez grupy The Animals, The Rolling Stones, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Searchers, czy The Kinks. Podstawą repertuaru pozostały jednak utwory The Beatles, które zespół starał się odtwarzać nie tyle wiernie, co stylowo, kładąc nacisk na spontaniczność i szczerość przekazu. Skupiając się na utworach The Beatles zespół przyjął nazwę Żuki Rock and Roll Band – adoptując spolszczoną wersję nazwy angielskiej.
W roku 1983 zespół z powodzeniem wystąpił na studenckim przeglądzie muzycznym „Śpiewać każdy może”, organizowanym przez poznańskie media i klub studencki NURT, zajmując drugie miejsce. Od tego czasu datuje się wieloletnia współpraca Żuków z poznańskim klubem NURT, dzięki której zespół mocno zaistniał w ogólnopolskim ruchu studenckim, grając dziesiątki koncertów na imprezach w całym kraju.
W 1988 do zespołu dołączył Grzegorz Radomski (gitara, harmonijka ustna, śpiew), ustalając skład grupy. W roku 1989 zespół odbył miesięczne tournee po Francji, w 1990 został zaproszony do Assen w Holandii, gdzie grał na imprezach towarzyszących Sportowym Mistrzostwom Świata dla Niepełnosprawnych. Ponadto zespół koncertował w Niemczech, Andorze i na Litwie. W 2003 nowym basistą został Robert Fraska, zaprzyjaźniony z zespołem muzyk grup Hot Water i Boogie Chilli, który sporadycznie współpracował z Żukami w latach 90.
W 2007 roku Żuki Rock and Roll Band zostały zaproszone do udziału w dorocznym festiwalu International Beatle Week, który odbywa się w Liverpoolu. Zespół zagrał 9 koncertów, w tym trzykrotnie wystąpił na scenie klubu Cavern, w miejscu, gdzie The Beatles zaczynali swoją karierę. Wyjazd do Liverpool zaowocował w następnym roku zaproszeniem zespołu do Francji na doroczny festiwal Beatles Night w Wasquehal, koło Lille.

Wout Steenhuis

Wout Steenhuis hailed from The Hague, Holland and was a member of The Dutch Resistance Movement during the last war. His activities with the movement caught up with him and he was imprisoned in the Amersfoort Concentration Camp. 
Whilst there he made his escape enroute to execution. In May 1945 during fighting with Germans he was shot in the right arm. After a few operations the arm was once again suitable for playing the guitar, which he did as a member of the Dutch Swing College Orchestra.
He came to England in 1948 followed shortly after by his fiance whom he married later that year. Encouraged by his wife he sent some of his recordings to the B.B.C. and very soon he made his debut broadcast in 'Guitar Club'.
After that Wout appeared on several radio programmes - Breakfast Special, Open House, Charlie Chester and Easy Beat to name just a few.One of the unique features of Wout's playing was that of his multi-tracking system whereby he played all the fretted instruments heard on record and on stage. All the backing instruments were recorded seperately at his home studio and then put together. In addition to using this system on record Wout also featured it with great success on TV, radio and on stage.
His repertoire ranged from Hawaiian to pop, from jazz to vocal.
In 1963 he signed a recording contract with Denis Preston of Landsdowne Recording Studios and all his recordings then appeared on Columbia, Studio 2 and EMI labels. In 1962-63 he appeared on Southern TV in the series 'Three of a Kind' and 'Their Kind of Music' along with that popular duo Dorita Y Pepe.The sound by which most people associate Wout with is that of his home made 'Jelmer' Hawaiian guitar which can be heard on the majority of his recordings.
On earlier albums Wout was backed by The Kontikis - a name given to his own backing of multi-tracked instruments. On later albums however, due to the expansion of orchestration, it became a lengthy and laborious job to play all the instruments himself so the Kontikis were made up of session musicians such as Herbie Flowers / Tony Campo (bass), Alan Parker / Dick Abel (guitar) and Clem Cattini / Barry Morgan (drums).
Wout of course still played the main melody parts himself (i.e. Hawaiian guitar, solo guitar and ukelele).

On stage Wout used his multi-track backing to the fullest whilst playing lead 'live'. For his stage act he used the 'Jelmer' Hawaiian guitar, Burns Black Bison, HH Amplification, Sennheiser microphones and a Revox A77 tape recorder.

Wout has several Hawaiian albums to his credit, along with a couple recorded in the jazz idiom namely 'Wout' and 'Bird in the Park' released in 1969 and 1970 respectively. In addition to being a guitar virtuoso he was also a prolific composer and under the pen name of Jelmer is credited for such titles as Hawaiian Chimes, Blue Dolphin, Malihini March, Bora Bora, Lazy Guitar and Aroha Hawaii. The latter he sings in Maori.
Wout and his music have travelled the world whilst appearing as resident guitarist on board the Queen Elizabeth II, visiting places like Bermuda, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia, Fiji and Hawaii.

Apart from being a solo artist, Wout has backed singers Johnny Christian and Keely Ford and also the vocal group The Wedgwoods.January 1978 saw the release of 'What's New' EMI EMC3220 and featured a variety of guitar sounds and arrangements and Wout was backed by a small group. 
Tracks such as Mr. Tambourine Man, Green Green Grass of Home, House of the Rising Sun and Harper Valley PTA first heard a decade earlier were all given a new lease of life in the talented hands of Wout.

In October 1981 Warwick Records released 'Hawaiian Paradise' WW5106 a compilation of Wout's previous recordings with new arrangements plus a few new titles. Included free with this album was 'Hawaiian Christmas' HXS 100 which featured a selection of festive tunes. This two-for-the-price-of-one album reached No.28 in the album charts during December.After a long absence from the recording scene came the brilliant 'Hawaiian Country' Valentine VAL8052 released in February 1983. This album contained a selection of C & W tunes played on the Hawaiian guitar and backed by a group of musicians in the shape of Dick Abel (lead/12 string guitar), Colin Green (rhythm guitar), Dave Richmond (bass), Cliff Hall (keyboards), Barry Morgan (drums), Frank Ricotti (tuned percussion/L.A. Percussion), Keith Nelson (banjo), Harry Pitch and Judd Lander (harmonica) plus vocal backing from Norma Winstone, Jean Gilbert and Tracy Miller.
Wout of course played Hawaiian, lead and rhythm guitar.

Wout Steenhuis passed away on Tuesday 9th July 1985 but left behind a legacy of music to enjoy and savour.

One of the best instrumental guitar groups in the history of the Dutch pop history have undoubtedly been Rene and the Alligators. Solo Guitarist Rene Nodelijk on 9 August 1942 in The Hague was born in Van Kinsbergenstraat (later living in the Crispijn, Marnix, First Braam, Bali Strait and Vaillantlaan). At the address Crispijn Street 5 started it all. Raised in the South Park neighborhood he went with his friends Jaap Berkhout, Rudy Racz (both Indian) and Reyn Rozenberg with cheap Spanish guitar to the Scheveningen beach to impress girls, calling themselves ........ THE BEACH BOYS. In the autumn of 1956 saw Rene and his mates Bill Haley & The Comets in the movie "Rock Around The Clock". The sensational rock & roll in this film made such an impression on the boys that they later decided to start a rock band.

In April 1958 THE ROCKIN 'SENSATION BOYS established. Rene herein began with his first self-built electric guitar. They used old radios and amplifiers. Electric basses were not yet known in Europe and Rudy Racz used a tea chest with a broomstick and a wire coming. They had borrowed from the skiffle bands. Rene also began singing in the group. First the hits of Bill Haley and Little Richard but later the Elvis repertoire. He was not only geпnteresseerd in rock & roll but also musicians like Benny Goodman (clarinet) and Eddy Calvert (trumpet). The first performance of THE ROCKIN 'SENSATION BOYS took place during a school of the Han Stijkel School at the Waldeck Pyrmontkade in The Hague on 27 June 1958 (source: Reyn Rozenberg). It was the time of the Indo straps. Sometimes mixed with Dutch - like THE ROCKIN 'SENSATION BOYS - but all with an Indian base. On the many talent shows they met. Rene also began to dye his hair black, so everyone thought he was an Indian boy, but he wanted his especially big black crest on Elvis Presley seem. In the Christmas issue of Tuney Tunes (december 1960) was a full page photo of Rene included, which reports that the rocker was born in The Hague under the rustling palms in sunny Indonesiл. In the TT from January 1961, however, this quickly put right.


On 24 September 1958 in room "Amigo" (Rue Neuve, The Hague) an election held for the "Dutch Elvis Presley". Rene Nodelijk was third, with his yellow silk jacket - borrowed from Johnny Leeuwarden (Johnny Lion). From this festival a few minutes in the newsreels archives preserved. Rene Nodelijk sang "Jailhouse Rock". The RSB also occurred in the pavilion of the roller rink in the South Park (rock & roll dance club of Willy Wissink). In September 1959 Rene professional wanted to work with Hugo on the Jagt. The remaining members of the SSF were initiated by Reyn Rozenberg on 29 September 1959 under the name THE REBEL ROCKERS.


In November 1959 a conflict arose between the two singers Rene Nodelijk and Rein de Vries. The remaining band members continued with Rein de Vries as THE ROCKIN 'SENSATION BOYS. Rene then started his own band and from that moment came the Alligators. The inspiration came from the rock'n'roll hits of Bill Haley See You Later Alligator. This name was proposed by the mother of Rene. George was a friend of Comello Rene and he also acted for a while as his "bodyguard" in that hectic period between rival rock & roll bands. Besides George Comello attended the Hague fishmonger van der Kraats, his son Richard was a jazz drummer and through the mediation of George, Richard van der Kraats the drummer for the Alligators. Hans Emmerich (guitar) and Ton Schattelijn (piano, clarinet), two acquaintances of Rene at the conservatory and made the first occupation of the Alligators complete.


On November 28, 1959 they made their debut at a major talent, which was organized in the city auditorium in Vlaardingen. Existed when the Alligators 2 weeks, and promptly won - thanks to a guitar solo by Hans Emmerich - the 1st prize with a beautiful arrangement of the traditional Russian Two Guitars (in 1962 also put on the plate). It began with a classical piece and then went into rock'n'roll. They wore while lovely purple shirts (bought at HEMA) and the effect of the stage lighting on it was beautiful. They won the cup and left 2 renowned competitors behind. THE ROCKIN 'SENSATION BOYS played that night Red River Rock, a recorder and the Rotterdam Indo-OETY & his band were very REAL ROCKERS rant: like lying on the floor playing and they had a huge volume for that time. Everyone expected that ййn would be, but they were second. During the 2nd performance of the band at the Clubhouse on the Boerhave Street (late 1959) was the name changed to Rene and the Alligators. Rene then had another carriиre as a singer in mind, hence the addition of his name.

Rene graduated Trade ULO, followed for 2 years a classical violin and guitar training at the Hague Conservatory and then spent six years as a professional training at the Royal Conservatory of Music (guitar and violin). One study, which he never finished because of the many act as a professional musician with the Alligators. At the end of 1959, Rene by record company Phonogram invited to the guitar party itself to play on the song Sugar Bowl Rock for Fontana single by Paul Gimbel (the famous NEDL. tennis champion), she preferred still a young rock & roll guitarist over a session musician. Gimbel was himself high geлindigd during Elvis impersonation contest on May 28, 1959 in Amsterdam. Won by Pim Maas Ria Valk. A photograph of the couple in the studio in January 1960 appeared in the music magazine Tuney Tunes, the name of the guitarist with the big black crest and white guitar was still not listed, we arrived back until later.

Rene played in that season on a big white Egmond guitar and in the course of 1960 we see him in pictures with a typical flat Egmond model. Mid-1960s following the Framus guitars and from 1961 there is also a photo showing Rene seen with a flat Hofner guitar and Dynacord echo. Rene began at that time at home guitar lessons to aspiring young guitarists, some of whom later turned up in The Hague famous beat bands. Guitarist Roelf Backus (ex-The Raylettes and The Groovy's) wrote his reminiscences of old t Scheveningen and told ao ..... in 1963 I got guitar lessons from Rene of the Alligators. For f 7.50 per hour, he came to see you and you got home privйles. From him I learned for the first Indo-driving style of play: the Indo-Rock ..... Rene also taught at the music of Bas van Rest on the corner of the Westeinde and Vleerstraat. Bass would at a later stage also the manager of Rene and the Alligators are.

In 1960, Pim Veeren the first bassist in the band and accompanying guitarist Ton van de Graaf (†) was the successor of Hans Emmerich (founded his own band THE ricochets on guitar) at The Alligators and was for many years a solid force. In the summer of 1960 and the Alligators were Rene their first recordings for CNR make. Rene told in 1975 in the TROS radio Prints by Tom Mulder wonderful anecdote about the following: .... Yes, that was laugh though. We had a mobile studio CNR first in Gooiland Hotel in Hilversum recorded the instrumental part. What a hassle that was, nobody would ever get over his head in such a way to work. They trudged themselves with mud the whole installation, aluminum screens. And for that one picture! They were all studio musicians who played on the leaf. Was unique in that their bass player and bass player played the same party together. I played lead guitar in Hilversum. (The Alligators were not allowed to participate) We have a whole day and night repeated. The recording of me singing in a large church would later be incorporated in Rotterdam. It took days to complete the installation again from Hilversum to Rotterdam across. When my voice was not good and my English is not. They tried a Dutch text for me, but that did not work out, so I've sung English anyway. This album is a joke has become. Halfway suddenly you hear the bass no more and then suddenly hard and primitive. Boy, the young was funny, but it has cost them thousands. One song was So Mad own piece and the other Knockin 'On Your Window, what Robin was just where my father had made an English text.

In the period December 1960 t / m in February 1961 and the Alligators Rene played in Germany. They started in Kaiserslautern. H alverwege Mr. Pelosi wanted the month of Bernhardseck Hanau necessarily have the Alligators. Hanau was still played in January 1961 . In that period also saw Rene the Tielman Brothers play at the Jolly Bar in Hanau. He had already seen at work on 3 January 1960 in the Dome Room of the former zoo at the Hague Koningskade. Rene took a lot of inspiration in their way of playing and repertoire. In February 1961 she worked for another month contract in the famous RR Weindorf Club in Frankfurt am Main.

In Bernhard Eck in Hanau, they were relieved by the then inexperienced CRAZY ROCKERS, February 15, 1961 that their German adventure started. Pim Veeren she had with the old Opel Kapitдn Pelose of the owner in The Hague retrieved. He drove back to Hanau in the 4-seater car with 7 men + installation + Wed drum personal belongings. Especially to mention is that Pim Veeren in 1963 and obtained his license in 1965, the German version!

They stayed with the band members Rene and the Alligators in a youth hostel. Rene and his men would go back again to Holland, bassist only their Pim Veeren preferred to remain in Germany play. The Dutch Henny Aschman drummer of THE CRAZY ROCKERS had soon got homesick and Sidney Rampersad arranged so that Pim per 1 March 1961 as a bass player now came to him play.

Back in the Netherlands disappeared in early 1961 their saxophonist Leo van Oostrum (to THE ROCKIN 'SENSATION BOYS) from the ranks and Rudie Schoonewelle came in March 1961 by the Alligators as the new bassist. Together with Rene Nodelijk (lead guitar), Ton de Graaf (rhythm guitar) and Richard van der Kraats (drums) was now the occupation which arise in the near future, most recordings were made. They are now more focused on the instrumental work in the style of The Shadows and The Ventures. A certain Indian Eddy W. van Hemert, former officer of the public welfare, the group had already seen in action several times including in Voorburg and in the South Park. He was impressed by their performance and on his advice was a band and who ended up shooting at record company Phonogram. He became their manager and thanks to his meddling Rene and the Alligators were invited to a recording studio in Hilversum to appear before making a plate.

The four numbers after much deliberation, in consultation with recording engineer Jan de Winter were eligible for inclusion were: Gipsy Rock (own arrangement of Rene, based on a rhapsody of Johannes Brahms), The Alligator's Dance (own composition Rene ) My Happiness (new arrangement of the Connie Francis hit from 1958) and Theme From Limelight-Rock (rock melody arrangement of this film, also known as Terry's Theme from 1951 by Charlie Chaplin). The recording session lasted five hours. The songs were released in quick succession delivered 2 singles and appeared on EP in the autumn of 1961. In the spring of 1962 went Rene and the Alligators on Fender Jazzmaster guitars and amps play. They were so quick with the shots of Heisser Sand (German hit for Mina and later for Anneke Grцnloh with Burning Sand) and Granada (not the popular song by Augustin Lara, but the unknown march composition Josй Lara) that Jan de Winter said nтg if she had two pieces. That was Guitar Boogie and In The Mood. It was their best selling single and one of the monuments of the Dutch pop history.

Around september 1962, and the Alligators Rene back in the studio together with THE TELSTARS, a duo that consisted of Pete and Pete Goossen Oomen, two Leiden law students. Drummer Richard van der Kraats could not attend due to holiday and would play an invader. During the next studio session in early 1963 were 2 songs recorded Rene who for years played during live shows. In season 1963/1964 and the Alligators Rene played every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 20.00 to 24.00 in the Pavilion of the South Park, organized by dance club "The Alligators". Also guitar bands like THE NOISE MAKERS, THE captors and THE SOLIDS and many others who played at dances. Rudie Schoonewelle stepped end of 1963 the band (he would return a year later) and was replaced by the Rotterdam bassist Peter la Haye. Peter was right in the studio early 1964 to work for the recording of the single Wham! (cover of Lonnie Mack) and Bust Out (cover by The Busters - Arlen 1963). It was created with a single THE TELSTARS - with polyphonic Beatles' song in Is not Gonna Kiss Ya (composition by James Marcus Smith aka PJ Proby for The Ribbons and previously covered by The Searchers on their first LP and EP from 1963) and Sally Ann. THE TELSTARS were discovered by Eric von Aro, a German show producer and wife of Caterine Valente, he was impressed by their performance of Is not Gonna Kiss Ya and let them occur in the very popular Caterine Valente Show. There was a contract for the Decca label and THE TELSTARS + Rene and the Alligators were invited to Berlin in a German studio 2 songs in the style to come beat us. That were the songs: Tu Mich Nicht Weh and Lass Die In Lou Ruh . In Hilversum, in the spring to the single included - We Know and He's Your Lover . In the autumn of 1964 brought Eric von Aro them back to Germany and became the new cast (Ed Bekking on rhythm guitar and Rudie Schoonewelle back on bass) recording of the 2nd German single from THE TELSTARS made ??- Mach Mit Mir Holiday and Nur Fьr Mich .

Also, they worked in 1964 with the LP 5 seconds of Woof - with built overdubbed applause and presentation by Herman Stok. In June 1964 left Ton van de Graaf and Peter la Haye (to The Condors - Rotterdam) the Alligators. Leo was succeeded by Ed Bekking, a guitarist himself a year earlier 'discovered' and had starred in THE SPECIAL FIVE.

In December 1964 Wim Zech left the group and came Louis Blonk (ex-Willy & his Giants) to sit behind the drums. On their latest instrumental single they were playing Italian Galanti guitars. In Eurovision Mars were the characteristic guitar riffs of Rene still prominent and honored 12th.Street Rag got a very distinct timbre through the use of Rene Galanti's 12-string electric guitar. Producer Tony Vos took Rene in 1965 to the studio to the guitar part of the number Kinks A Well Respected Man (A Respectable Man ) for the debut LP by Boudewijn de Groot in play.

The last occupation of the Alligators with. including Frank Bianchi (vocals, guitar, keyb.) and Kees Groenendaal (drums) was in May 1967 renamed TOBY COLLAR - that's English for the head of a beer. In August 1968, Hans Bianchi to replace bassist Ruud Schoonewelle in the band and they act briefly as THE Dimples, then again quickly TOBY COLLAR and they made the end of 1968 the first single on Polydor with Tallahassee Lassie , which Rene again go back to his early days went. Bea William Stein - Rene his first wife - went in 1969 to work as a singer TOBY COLLAR.
